With age, the skin on the eyelids sags and bags under the eyes can form. Certain risk factors favour the development – we explain here what they are, how you can prevent them and what you can do once the bags under the eyes are there.
How are tear sacs formed?
When fat accumulates under the eyelids, bags under the eyes form; the likelihood of this happening increases with age as the skin continues to sag. The bags under the eyes get stronger over time. Some people also have a genetic predisposition that leads to unsightly swellings on the lower eyelids at a younger age.
In addition, the following factors can lead to swollen eyes and promote the formation of bags under the eyes:
- stress
- too less sleep
- unhealthy lifestyle, especially smoking and excessive alcohol consumption
- allergies, e.g. B. against pollen, certain cosmetic products, contact lenses
- inflammation or infection of the eyes
- If you regularly drink too little liquid, this can also be noticed by bags under the eyes. When this happens, the blood thickens, which can increase swelling.
Can I prevent eye bags?
A healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, enough sleep and little stress are excellent ideas to keep a fresh, youthful and healthy appearance for as long as possible. Try to drink at least two litres of water or other unsweetened, non-alcoholic beverages a day, avoid cigarettes and don’t overdo it with alcohol – your skin and body will thank you.
Furthermore, you can prevent bags under your eyes by regularly caring for the sensitive area around your eyes with a unique, moisturising eye cream. If you’re genetically predisposed to getting bags under your eyes, you’ll probably still experience puffiness on your lower eyelids one day – but it won’t be as severe.
Are there home remedies that help against bags under the eyes?
Once the fat has built up under the skin of the eyelid, home remedies can only reduce the swelling, not eliminate it. It helps to cool the eye area, for example, with a gel mask for the eyes or two teaspoons in the fridge beforehand. Cold tea bags with black tea or green tea and fresh cucumber slices on the eyes also relieve the symptoms.
Apart from that, it is easier to prevent bags under the eyes with the measures mentioned than to get rid of them once they occur.
How can stubborn eye bags be removed?
If the home remedies do not help or hardly at all against the bags under the eyes, only a laser treatment or an operation by an aesthetic surgeon can help. During the process, fatty tissue is removed, and the skin on the lower eyelids is tightened. The technical term for this procedure is “blepharoplasty”.
The patient usually has to bear the costs for such an operation or a laser treatment for bags under the eyes. This is primarily a cosmetic problem, not a medical problem – so there is usually no financial support from health insurance companies.
How can I remove eye bags?
With a concealer that matches your skin tone exactly, you can hide the bags under your eyes. But don’t overdo it; instead, apply only a very thin layer. As a precaution, you should avoid powder or eye shadow on the lower eyelid. If makeup gets caught in the lines under your eyes, you accentuate them instead of trying to hide them.
However, to make your eyes look bigger and more awake, you can prime the upper lid with light eyeshadow and apply some eye shadow in a warm, dark brown tone in the crease.
